Florida In The Cone For Potential Tropical Storm
(Miami, FL) -- We may have to brace ourselves for a tropical storm this weekend. The National Hurricane Center said yesterday that Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine in the Atlantic could become Tropical Storm Isaias today. The effects of the storm could reach Florida by the end of the week. Landfall could come this weekend in South Florida, but almost the entire state is in the NHC's forecast cone.
Brevard County Asks Hundreds To Quarantine
(Titusville, FL) -- There are health concerns over a high school graduation ceremony in Brevard County. Health officials this week alerted attendees of Saturday's Bayside High School graduation ceremony that someone there got the coronavirus. Those who attended the ceremony in Palm Bay, which included almost 300 students, were asked to quarantine for two weeks. Anyone who develops symptoms is asked to contact their local health department.
Jax City Council Rejects Property Tax Hike
(Jacksonville, FL) -- Jacksonville's mayor is pleased with the latest vote by the city council. The council yesterday rejected a proposal to raise the property tax rate by two-percent. Opponents said now is not the time to be raising taxes. Mayor Lenny Curry agreed and tweeted families are hurting these days.
Two Children Hurt In Shooting
(Hialeah, FL) -- Two children are hurt after an attempted shoplifting turned violent in Miami-Dade County. Police say the man was trying to rob Hialeah's Rey Chavez Supermarket yesterday when a security guard chased him out of the store. As the man was getting in a getaway car, police say the guard fired his gun, and two girls in the car were hit in their legs. The eight and six-year-old are expected to survive, and their mother is in custody.
Woman Gives Birth On Pontoon Boat
(Clearwater, FL) -- A Pinellas County mom will have an interesting story to tell her son one day about how he came into the world. Dunedin's Amber Easterday was on a pontoon boat with family and friends July Fourth when she went into labor. They were able to get the boat to shore where they were met by fire medics, who helped deliver the boy, named Aiden, on the boat. Everyone's fine, and mom recently told ABC Action News the company they rented the boat from renamed it Aiden's Arrival.
Scientists Revive 100-Million-Year-Old Microbes
(Yokosuka, Japan) -- Japanese scientists say they have revived 100-million-year-old microbes. They had been lying dormant in sediment at the floor of the South Pacific sea, but with some incubation the microbes started to eat and multiply. Lead author of the study, Yuki Morono, says now they know there is no age limit for organisms in the biosphere beneath the sea floor. The study by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology was published in the journal Nature Communications.
