This candidate has a first name

B-a-r-a-c-k

This candidate has a second name

It’s O-b-a-m-a

But I don’t like his middle name,

If you ask me why, ‘cause it’s HUSSEIN

Barack Obama has a way

To kill his campaign every day

Obama is a strange man

He has so many friends

One blew up Chicago

And never made amends

He has a preacher, name is Wright

The words he speaks, they bring a fight

Barack Obama has a way

To kill his campaign every day

He also has a family

He takes them on the trail

The wife watches him so closely

You’d think he had a tail

His wife is smart, that’s what they say

She also hates the USA

Barack Obama has a way

To kill his campaign every day

Supporters like him so much

They’ll vote for no one but

The thought of Mrs. Clinton

Makes their mouths go shut

They’d rather vote for John McCain

Than to deal with Bill and Hill again

Barack Obama has a way

To kill his campaign every day

WHO IS BILL MICK?
Bill is a product of West Virginia – Clendenin, WV was essentially Mayberry. A small town, everybody knew everybody else and it was nice. Bill's mom and dad had him in church every time the doors were open because that was what you did and it was what you believed. That foundation led Bill to public service and a concern for community that was inspired by his father’s dedication to church and community.

Bill became a cop in West Virginia, a career he never thought he would leave until retirement. It did not work out that way, but that was for the better. After the law enforcement career, Bill managed security and personnel in private industry, tried his hand at sales in various fields and umpired a lot of baseball. From recreational and instructional levels to college and minor league baseball, Bill spent a lot of time on the diamond. It was a passion, but so was talk radio.

It was the experience as an umpire, strangely enough, that gave Bill the confidence to give talk radio a shot. In umpire school you HAVE to be right all the time. Of course, you are not. You have to be confident in your ability and the reasons you do the things you do. Yes, umpire school proved that the learning does in fact continue every day. It’s the same with radio and the daily conversations about the issues impacting our lives.

After his years on the air in Brevard, Bill took an opportunity to take his show to California. It was a growing and learning experience and Bill is bringing that experience in tow as he returns to the only place besides West Virginia that really feels like home – Brevard County.

Bill, his wife Connie and their youngest son Tyler live in Satellite Beach. They have two older sons and two grandchildren (no matter how much Bill believes he is too young for such things).

Politically a Republican with some admitted Libertarian leanings, Bill seeks practical and common sense solutions to the problems that face our communities and the leaders we elect to deal with them. Following the money is wise, but electing leaders with integrity is more important. Combining the two should provide some decent results, according to Bill.

As we head into the weekend we will fortunately miss most of the impact of Hanna, but Hurricane Ike is an imposing figure for next week.  We’ll decide today if my vacation scheduled for next week is going to have to wait and how much “hurricane mode” will play into next week’s plans.  Guess I could be lucky and be a City Manager in West Melbourne and just not worry about it and phone it in if necessary…I’m just not cut that way.  But, if I were on a Hawaii trip or something, I could be persuaded change my mind.

Storms (hurricanes and the political version) will dominate the next few days, but we’ll make time for Touchdown Tom and College Football in our 8:30 half hour today.  We’ll take a look at John McCain’s address as he accepted the Republican nomination last night and get your thoughts on where it all goes from here.  If polling after Sarah Palin’s speech is any indication, we have ourselves a horserace and good chance for the Palin factor to take the Republicans into the White House in November.  We’ll see.

I have listened to John McCain as I prepared this Thursday evening.  He has talked of change in Washington and more personal responsibility.  He talked of smaller government and lower taxes…the ideas are there.  I am encouraged by the presence of Sarah Palin that there can be some action behind the rhetoric.  John McCain took responsibility in pointing at Congress and both parties for the out of control and uncaring Washington we see.  While I am still not a complete McCain advocate, largely because of Sarah Palin, I am encouraged in the possibility that we can see positive change in Washington.  If not in this administration, then maybe the next.  It will not turn around on a dime…it did not get that way overnight.  Of the two choices we have (sorry third party types, we have to take a bite of reality here, just no chance for your candidate) clearly the McCain/Palin ticket is the only one with a plan that is anywhere close to what we want and need in Washington.  It is a start in the direction we need Washington to move.  It is a chance we need to take.  The other choice is one we can not afford.

Sarah Palin is the GOP’s nominee for Vice President.  She spoke at the Republican Convention last night.  What did she say?  Maybe more importantly, how did she say it?  How was it received?  Does the McCain/Palin ticket get a bump out of the convention…my guess is: you bet!  We’ll take your reaction to the address and listen to portions of it during today’s BML.

Matt Reed is with us in our 7am hour on this Thursday.  The Brevard Watchlist columnist/editor will sift through Brevard happenings as we take your calls and get into the issues of the day.  Senator Mike Haridopolos will join us at the start of the 8am hour to discuss Sarah Palin’s address to the nation last night.  Around that we’ll talk several of the stories posted below.  LA has a new high school…it cost them $350 million to build it.  Not on our best day!  Major League Baseball used replay for the first time last night…and the umpire was right (not that I am surprised by that).  The Florida Supreme Court has tossed 3 ballot amendments that addressed government’s sacred cow (education) for fear we’d take some money out of play.  We need to finish up on the inability of candidates and their camps to take criticism in a campaign without the threat of lawsuit and we’ll listen to parts of Sarah Palin’s speech last night...all ahead on this edition of BML.

Now that I have the entire cycling community up in arms we need to be as worried as we would be if the French decided they were going to attack!  Follow up e-mail in the BML Inbox!

As we jump into a WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY we’ll allow your control of the topic selection once again.  We have several stories remaining in our Mickover section plus the new stories on tap for today.  The Republican National Convention got underway for real last night.  The Sarah Palin pick seems to have energized the Republican base that had all but given up on the party being what we want it to be or John McCain being its leader.  We’ll see how that continues through and after the convention.  Senator Mike Haridopolos will give us an update from St. Paul and the RNC in our 8am hour.  We’ll begin a new WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY feature: Jorge’s Jabs.  Jorge will bring a few topics with audio tidbits for you to the show on these days and we’ll take on Jorge’s topic of choice for a time.  I am looking forward to this…the kid sees some interesting things and has his own unique take on them.  I can’t wait to hear what he has found!

Hope you were able to be with us for yesterday’s Labor Day show.  We had a good time with my oldest son, Chris and Matt Nye from Space Coast Politics.com.  Mark Vance made it in for the last couple of hours and we discussed several things including John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin for the VP slot.  It was and remains the focus of our web poll.  What do you think of the pick?  It appears to have energized the Republican base and deflated any impact of the Democrat National Convention.  We can now focus on the issues facing the country and how our government will be best prepared to handle them.  Sarah Palin is a good addition to the debate.

As with any public figure, her family is now thrust into the glare of the media spotlight.  It focuses on her teenage daughter who is, we learn, pregnant.  She is marrying the father and keeping the child.  This is pretty interesting coverage for a side of the political spectrum that did not want anyone questioning Chelsea Clinton about anything during her mother’s campaign.  Hummm?  Consistency?  Not in this case.

Oh, and it looks like I have offended a dangerous segment of our population.  Competitive cyclists are riled over my comments of Friday’s show regarding their ridiculous looking outfits and helmets.  I was kidding around…but the response to these comments could be fighting words…see what I mean in the BML Inbox to the left of this page.  If we get into today’s libraries story I am sure to offend another group of radicals with violent, if self destructive, tendencies.

Let’s get the bloodbath started…

RANDOM ACTS OF STUPIDITY…AND KINDNESS:  There are weekend examples of both that I hope to get to today.

We have to start the day with the story of Mr. Prius Driver.  This nut nearly made me rear end him with his STUPID actions as a driver that I am sure he believes were entirely appropriate!  He is a menace and has no clue…he should probably NOT be drinking that coffee he was pulling into the drive through to get as he is driving down the road!  He is not competent to drive with 2 hands, much less one while holding a hot drink in the other!  Oh, if this accident would have happened it would have been (technically) MY FAULT!!!!!!!!  WE SHOULD BAN THESE PEOPLE FROM THE PLANET!  Sadly, this is what I now think of ANYONE driving a Prius.

Then there was the weekend trip to the grocery store.  The lady in front of me at the checkout did not have enough change to keep from digging for another dollar or more change to get it right…This is not a big deal, I gave her a dime.  Ten cents that would not buy more than two pieces of bubble gum, but it had a much larger impact.  Same coin, both sides and how they impact your day when you are involved.

The Labor Day Show brings my oldest son, Chris, in to co-host the program along with Matt Nye, the founder and Managing Editor of Space Coast Politics.com.  Not too long after Friday’s show ended, John McCain rocked the political world by selecting Alaska’s Governor Sarah Palin as his choice for Vice President.  The political waters did not stir, they splashed.  We’ll talk that up on today’s show and get your thoughts along the way.  Me, I am excited about the pick, but it was not my first reaction.

In last week’s primary election the internet played an interesting and possibly significant role.  Co-host Chris is one of those internet generation kids and Matt is in the computer and internet business.  We’ll talk to them about this phenomenon and specifically Matt’s Space Coast Politics.com and the role it played (and maybe still is playing) in the Brevard Clerk of Courts race.  Brevard has more kids taking SAT exams and is now surprised that the average scores are declining.  I am not surprised.  Not every kid is a college prospect, but the pressure to take these tests is huge.  Education is feeding itself and the belief that every kid should go to college is not only wrong, it is dangerous.  When you push the kids to take this test, even though it may not be compatible with their goals, you get the scores you deserve.

There is nothing like our interest in sports to give us a moment to relax and enjoy life in spite of all the things that politics and life in general throw at us.  Today we get back into the swing of college football season as Touchdown Tom is back for his weekly visits.  We are also starting a new sports talk show on WMMB tomorrow…Playing the Field, hosted by Kelly Red will air Saturdays at 9am starting tomorrow.  Both Tom and Kelly are with us in our 8am hour.

To start that 8am hour, though, Senator Mike Haridopolos (a delegate to the Republican National Convention) will give us a preview of that event (provided it starts next week) and will also join us at 8:05 every day next week to recap the convention events.

Our first two hours today belong to you and me.  We’ll try and catch up on the stories that have been lingering in this election season and get your take on them.  We’ll open the day finishing our look at Matt Reed’s column from yesterday on the tone of Tuesday’s election.  Let’s get this conversation moving and let you go enjoy all the football this weekend!
