It’s time college and professional sports take themselves seriously. While the talented athletes give us hour upon hour of entertainment, the tolerance for often downright criminal behavior is wearing thin on me. Today we have yet another story of a college athlete and his second arrest in as many months. If these athletes are not valuing the opportunities they have, it’s time to hand the chance off to someone who will appreciate it and not embarrass the institution or team that provides it. While the Zimmerman dialogue is winding down, the conversation has turned to “stand your ground’ ‘laws in a successful transition to something that was never in play in the case. The president and Senator John McCain both spouted off about it over the weekend. Locally the county commission is about to set tax rates and pursue a position of division on dune repairs. The tourism folks are talking changing Brevard’s brand from “The Space Coast” to Cocoa Beach. Does that make sense to you? And just down A1A, Satellite Beach quivers as Clerk of Courts Scott Ellis has his microscope focused on the city’s likely illegal acts with CRA funds.
