On this WIDE OPEN WEDNESDAY there is no shortage of stories for our consideration.  In Miami there is a brewing controversy over a spitball that isn’t.  Pro football and soccer are now avoiding Florida as the legislature didn’t fund stadiums for professional franchises…good!  We can watch on TV!  IRS protests around the country got some attention…of the Department of Homeland Security.  Protests in NY seek the repeal of NY’s harsh gun laws.  Updating a couple of local stories: Melbourne Beach has a new mayor and that Sebastian River teen has until Friday to take a plea deal.  In the county a business move shakes up a county commission race and the schools and commission are off to a rough start on the school closures meeting.  Should the state take on crimes committed on cruise ships?  State’s Attorney Phil Archer says yes.  Governor Scott has signed elections reform.  With all that, it’s still your day to direct our conversation on BML…what’s it gonna be?

It’s hard to imagine the devastation we see on the news from Oklahoma.  Same with the agony of parents as they await news on children rescued, or not, from the destroyed elementary school.  Prayer and dollars will help.  Go to www.redcross.org to make your donation.  Locally a high school senior has been arrested for a consensual relationship with a high schooler who is not of age.  The 18-14 relationship turned sexual and a young lady is facing an uncertain future.  Governor Scott hit the budget hard with his veto pen.  In Washington opposition grows to the immigration reform bill of the Gang of 8, The White House claims it knew of the IRS scandal, but President Obama did not…is that even plausible?  And, if it is, why would top staffers hide something so damning from the president?  It’s all in play as we begin a Tuesday on BML

IS 0.05% TOO LOW?

Over the weekend I saw a PSA (public service announcement) on TV about people who fake wearing a seat belt.  The spot said that police officers are trained in detecting this act and the tickets they write aren’t fake.  THIS is a priority for our cops?  Who has their priorities out of whack?  Have we turned traffic enforcement over to those who advocate non-competitive baseball…everyone gets to play?  Then, I noticed a push in some places to reduce the legal limit for DUI to 0.05% BAC…not even MADD mothers are behind this one.  What are the big government types thinking?  We’ll also follow up on the Amazon distribution center story…why is Florida turning away from these jobs?  If you are male, white and straight can you possibly understand diversity?  Apparently not at Northwestern.  The IRS has no concept of the First Amendment as the AP calls for it to back off and even CBS’ Bob Schieffer is frustrated with the Obama administration.  In Colorado most if the state’s sheriffs are suing over the new gun control laws.  That should keep us busy on a Monday…welcome to the week!

In a week where the Obama administration has seen scandal after scandal, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney simply isn’t living in the real world.  His comments to CNN’s Piers Morgan prove it.  Here in our real world Wickham Road businesses could see the end of suffering over road construction very soon.  Governor Scott has stopped some jobs from coming to Florida and the legislature went on a spending spree during the session.  How does President Obama punish the IRS leader of conservative persecution?  He puts her in charge of IRS Obamacare enforcement.  If you’ve seen the FX series The Americans you’ll have interest in the arrest of an accused US spy in Moscow and the last story posted above.  It is an intriguing world.

MELBOURNE BEACH COMMISSION MEETING

Scandal envelops Washington, DC and the Obama administration is the focus of it all.  The comparisons to Nixon are unavoidable and the wonder (or hope) is whether the president faces a similar fate.  Even so, the president took time out to specifically honor Deputy Barbara Pill and her family as part of Law Enforcement Memorial week.  Locally the heated politics are happening in Melbourne Beach where the town that wants to live in the past may need to resort to dueling to settle its commission differences.  On the county level Matt Reed and I are on opposite sides of the County Commission/School Board battle.  Matt joins us at 8am…should be interesting.  I’ll try to not have the radio police come toss him out of the studio…
